米国国立衛生研究所が資金を出し、ワシントン大学の研究者が行った研究により、エチル水銀はメチル水銀以上の毒性があることがわかってきています。この研究ではサルの子どもを使って、一方のグループにはメチル水銀、他方のグループにはエチル水銀を与え、その後、脳の中に含まれる総水銀、無機水銀量を比較するという実験が行われました。その結果、エチル水銀は同量のメチル水銀の２倍もの水銀が脳に残りやすいという結果が出たのです。エチル水銀は、メチル水銀以上に容易に血液脳関門を通過し、優先的に脳組織に蓄積され、徐々に無機水銀に変化していくことがわかったわけです（無機水銀に変化すると脳から排出されなくなります）。このことから、エチル水銀はメチル水銀以上に毒性が強く、脳神経系に問題を生じさせることが懸念されています。

メチル水銀の有害性
メチル水銀の有害性は、水俣病で有名ですので、今さら説明する必要もないものですが、中毒性中枢神経疾患であり、主要な症状は、四肢末端優位の感覚障害、運動失調、求心性視野狭窄、聴力障害、平衡機能障害、言語障害、振戦（手足の震え）等があり、症状が重篤なときは、狂騒状態から意識不明をきたしたり、さらには死亡したりする場合もございます。エチル水銀はメチル水銀以上に毒性が強いということが実験により明確になっておりますので、その危険性は推して知るべしと存じ上げます。なお、上記の論文は以下になります。
